III. Procedure/ Activities

A. Warm-up/Pre Activity

1. Flash Card Drill: Job Vocabulary

            Architect                     dancer                         farmer

            Actress                        mechanic                  carpenter

            Baker                       office worker              teacher

            Chef/cook                   doctor                         nurse

         Construction worker   driver                    police officer

2. Have the whole class read the words, by groups, by selected students.

B. Activity Proper

1. Motivation

1.1 Ask students “What’s my job?” Try to elicit “teacher” or “you’re a teacher”.

            Get the whole class to repeat “You’re a teacher.”

1.2 Mime carrying plates of food as though you were a waiter, and ask “What’s my job?” Elicit “waiter” from the students, then let the students repeat “You’re a waiter”

1.3 Now, mime other jobs and encourage students to shout out “You’re a ______.”

2. Presentation

1. Tell the students that you’ll be working on “Occupations”

2. Using the “job flashcards”, hold up the picture of the cook so that the whole class can see it and ask, “What‘s his job?” Students’ may just shout “cook”, try to elicit “He’s a cook”.

3. Discussion

 1. Discuss the following vocabulary:

  Occupation is the activity that a person does as their regular work.

A Job/Career is the order of events that occur in a persons’ work overtime.

2. on the board write:

What’s his job? He’s a ____________.

What’s her job? She’s a ____________.

  1. Show the students each flashcard, each time asking “What’s his/her job?” and eliciting the correct response.
  2. Show the students the picture of the waiter and ask “Is he a waiter?” Elicit “Yes, he is.” Then ask “Is he a builder?” and elicit “No, he isn’t.”

4. Use the flashcards to form questions and elicit answers using “he//she is/ isn’t.”

Is he /she a ____________? Yes, he/she is.

No, he/she isn’t.         

4. Pair Work

            Do the “Find your partners’ activity.”

            Have each pair practice question forms and use their new vocabulary without having

            to speak in front of the whole class or the teacher.

5. Generalization

            What is occupation?

            – Occupation is the activity a person does as their regular work. A job.

            Complete the sentences using the given jobs below.
