ALLOW and PERMIT – Active and Passive voice
In this English lesson, you will learn how to use the verbs “allow” and “permit” in the active voice and passive voice. You will learn when to use an infinitive and when to use a gerund.

allow /əˈlaʊ/ permit /pəˈmɪt/
past simple: allowed past simple: permitted
past participle: allowed past participle: permitted
The general meaning of these two verbs is:
-to give permission to do something.
– make it possible for somebody to do something
“permit” is more formal than “allow”
“permit” and “allow” use the same structures. Let’s look at them in detail.
allow / permit + ING form of the verb
allow / permit + object + infinitive
Dave allows / permits Roger to use his laptop.
Dave does not allow / permit Roger to use his laptop.
The Chief officer allows / permits us to give you a piece of advice.
The salary will allow / permit Josh to buy a motorcycle.
Passive voice
Gerund + verb Be + past participle “allow”/ permit
Eating is allowed /permitted inside the classroom.
Eating is not allowed /permitted inside the classroom.
Smoking is not allowed /permitted in the internet café.
Questions
Is eating allowed / permitted inside the classroom?
Is smoking allowed / permitted in the internet café?
Passive voice (2)
Person + verb Be + past participle “allow” / “permit” + infinitive
You are allowed / permitted to eat inside the classroom.
People are not allowed / permitted to smoke at the internet café.
Questions:
Are we allowed / permitted to eat inside the classroom?
Are people allowed / permitted to smoke at the internet café?
