Action Verbs in a Sentence

This is an introductory lesson on action verbs. Students will learn about action verbs and they will also identify verbs in sentences.

B. Activity Proper
1. Review
Teacher review parts of a sentence.
Example: Terry chases the cat.
Call a volunteer to underline the subject and the predicate twice
2. Motivation
Say; without a verb we cannot make a sentence. We need a verb to tell what is happening.
3. Presentation (through reading the sentences written on the board)
On the board write these sentences;
Roy walked his dog.
Nina sang a song.
My dog jumped over the fence.
The wind blew the trees.
Teacher reads the sentences first, then the whole class, then by selected students.
4. Discussion
Walked and sang are verbs. They tell us what Roy and Nina did.
Jumped and blew are also verbs. They tell us which actions the dog and the wind did.
Explain that a VERB is a word that tells or asserts something about a person or thing.
Verb comes from the Latin verbum, which means a word; it is so called because it is the most important word in a sentence.
5. Practice exercise
A. Read the sentence below and underline the verb, the action word in each sentence.
- He spoke haughtily.
- The bell rang loudly.
- The dog ran after me.
- We eat three times a day.
- You speak too loudly.
- The clock ticks all day long.
B. Pair Work: Have the students work in pairs, one student will give an action word and the other will use it in a sentence.
6. Group Activity
Divide the class into three groups and give each group an activity sheet. If time allows have each group exchange/switch their work. Be sure to prepare an extra copy of your activity sheet.
7. Generalization
What is a verb?
Why it is important?
Write students answers on the board and have the class reads it, then in groups then by selected students.

Circle the action verb in each sentence below.
1. The cat sleeps on the rug.
2. Cocks crow in the morning.
3. The fire burns dimly.
4. Ana writes a letter to her uncle.
5. The policemen blew his whistle.
6. The boy cut his hand with a knife.

VI. Remediation/ Enrichment
For slow learners’ students who find it hard to identify verbs in a sentence you need to review and explain what subjects are so students will understand about verbs. Give
simple sentences and have students underline the subject in the sentence and identify the verbs that the subject does.
VII. Reinforcement
For higher functional students you can act out and have them guess what your action is and let them use the action word in a sentence.
