Types of Sentences
In this complete tutorial for beginners, learners will be learn and identify the different “Types of Sentences”. What are the “Types of Sentences”?. How the “Types of Sentences” helps to properly express the thought a sentence.
In this lesson the students identify and learn different types of sentences and understood the differences between the types of sentences.
I. Objectives: At the end of this lesson the students will:
1. Learn and identify the different types of sentences
2. Give examples of the different types of sentences.
3. State the correct end punctuation associated with each of the 4 types of sentences
4. Write a short paragraph illustrating each type of sentences they have learned.

1. Motivation (through reading the short skit)
Short skit
Leah (kid): Can I have a piece of candy mom? Jen (mom): No, you may not! John (dad): Go to the car Leah. Rose (sister to kid): She always gets all the attention.
2. Presentation:
Say: Okay class what you read was a short skit. Each person used a different type of sentences. Can anyone tell me what the four kinds of sentences are?
On the board write the types of sentences:
Declarative Questions/ Interrogatory
Imperative Exclamatory
3. Discussion
Discuss and give examples of the 4 types of sentences:
1. Declarative: statement of fact without strong emotion and ends with a period;
I am a teacher.
Bill plays the ball.
2. Interrogatory: asks a question and end with a question mark;
What time will you be home?
Did you feed the dog?
3. Imperative: make a command or request and end with a period;
No talking until everyone finishes the assignment.
Close the door, please.
4. Exclamatory: communicates a high level of excitement or emotion and ends in an exclamation point;
She hit me for no reason!
I hate you!
I don’t love you anymore!
At each point in the explanation have students provide additional examples. Ask other students to evaluate the correctness of the students’ examples.
Write some sentences on the board and have the students read aloud and identify the type of sentence and punctuation using the table;

For each of the following sentences write the type of sentence each is, insert the correct end punctuation, and write a sentence explaining why the sentence is the type you indicated.
