The verb “get”

“get” is often a difficult verb for English students

 It has lots of different uses and meanings.

We use get;

-as a main verb with many different meanings

– in several idioms (expressions) that are difficult to translate literally.

-in several phrasal verbs

Forms of “get” as main verb and a phrasal verb

Present simple Form                     -ing form (continuous)

Forms of Get as a Main Verb

1. “get“ – as to “receive” something

to get something = to receive something

I got a phone for my birthday.

Sharon got a pair of sunglasses from her friend.

2.get” – as to “buy”, “obtain” or “fetch”

to get something = to buy / obtain / fetch something

He’s getting some food for lunch.

Jack is getting some books for his brother.

3.get” – as to “get for someone”

to get somebody something = to buy / obtain / fetch something for somebody

 My dad got Ben a bike.

Pat got Carl a backpack for his camping.

4. “get” – as to arrive at a place

          -to get somewhere / event = to arrive somewhere

I’m in Bali. I got here last week.

Paul got to the show at 4 o’clock.

5.get” – as to take

          to get a train / bus / flight / taxi = to take/ catch (transport)

 I got the plane on time.               

 I’m getting a taxi

6.get” – a main verb

          To get something = to understand something

 Ben is trying solve his Math’s problem but he didn’t get the answer.

I’m not attending the conference because I don’t get the agenda.

7.get” – as “to become”

          get + adjective = to become (progressive change)

Glenda is getting sad.                             

Peter is getting lazy.

Forms of Get as in Phrasal Verbs

 “get” – phrasal verbs to describe movement

to get on –to enter a train /bus/ aeroplane/ ship

to get in  – to enter a car/ taxi /small boat/ building / room

They are getting on the train.

The guest is getting in the room.

Ben is getting in a small boat.

“get” – phrasal verbs to describe movement

to get off–           to leave a train/bus/ aeroplane/ ship

to  get out of–     to leave a car/ taxi /small boat/ building / room

 The boy is getting off the school bus.

 John is getting out of the building.

Cecil is getting out of the taxi.

get upto leave the bed and start the day.

Carl is getting up.

“get” – phrasal verbs in general

-to get on well with somebody

-to have a good relationship with somebody.

Cecil gets on well with Claire.

“get” – Idiom (expression)

          To get somebody to do something

= to persuade somebody to do something.

Jack got me to watch concert with him.
