ING Verbs in English Lesson and Exercises – “ing” Forms, Spelling Rules and Grammar,
Good day! Today we’ll be discussing the verbs that ends in “ing” lesson to know their rules, forms and uses. This tutorial will be helpful for learners because it provides exercises and examples oh how to form or use and add the ing in the verbs.
They would be able to change the regular verbs by simply adding -ing to the infinitive or the base verb.

Verbs ending in silent -e: delete the -e and add -ing; Verbs ending in -ie; change the -ie to -y and add -ing; Verbs ending in a single vowel and a single consonant except (-w -x -y): For 1 syllable verbs; double the consonant and add -ing. If the final consonant is “w,” “x,” or “y,” don’t double it:
Verbs ending in a single vowel and a single consonant except (-w -x -y):
For 2 syllable verbs:If the 2nd syllable is stressed double the last consonant and add -ing. If the 1st syllable is stressed just add -ing.
Uses of the -ing verb form
All progressive tenses
- Present progressive (I am eating)
- Past progressive (they were dancing)
- Future progressive (we will be coming soon)
Gerunds (verbs used as a noun)
- I hate ironing
- Reading novels is my favorite hobby
As an Adjective
- I have a long washing day.
-ing verbs – spelling (1)
Most verbs or regular verbs we simply add -ing to the infinitive or add
-ing to the base verb.
Examples: cook – cooking
brush- brushing
eat – eating
-ing verbs – spelling (2)
Verbs ending in silent -e: delete the -e and add -ing
Examples: dance – dancing
thrive – thriving
wave – waving
Verbs ending in -ie; change the -ie to -y and add -ing
Examples: lie – lying
vie – vying
tie – tying
Verbs ending in -ee; add -ing
Examples: see -seeing
free- freeing

Verbs ending in a single vowel and a single consonant except (-w -x -y):
For 1 syllable verbs; double the consonant and add -ing.
mop – mopping
cut – cutting
hat – chatting
stop – stopping
If the final consonant is “w,” “x,” or “y,” don’t double it:
sew – sewing
play – playing
fix – fixing
row – rowing

Verbs sending in a single vowel and a single consonant except (-w -x -y):
For 2 syllable verbs:
If the 2nd syllable is stressed double the last consonant and add -ing.
admit – admitting
commit – committing
incur – incurring
prefer – preferring
If the 1st syllable is stressed just add -ing.
open – opening
enter – entering
swallow – swallowing
Exceptions for verbs ending in – l
In British English, for verbs ending in -l; double the -l and add -ing.
Cancel – cancelling travel – travelling
American English, for verbs ending in -l; same rules as above.
Cancel – canceling travel – traveling
-ing verbs – spelling (5)
Verbs ending in c; add -king to infinitive.
panic – panicking
mimic – mimicking
