Quotation examples in English

In this lesson students will learn to punctuate and capitalize quotations correctly.
I. Objectives: After this lesson the students would be able to;

1. Motivation
1.1 The teacher distributes strips of sentence to the students and directs them to find the quotations in the sentence as they can in a given time.
1.2 The teacher will ask for students to raise their hands and point out the quotations they found.
2. Presentation
Say; today you will be working on “Quotations”
3. Discussion
On the board write:
“I had a fantastic time at the zoo.” Jill said.
Joe said, “I got an A on my Math test!”
Based on the sample sentence on the board explain that;
1. The teacher explains that a quotation is the exact words of a speaker. It shows
where the speaker’s exact words begin and end. The first word in a quotation begins
with a capital letter.
2. Quotation marks surround dialogue conversation.
3. Quotation marks surround some titles;
Example: “Beauty and the Beast”
4. Quotation marks surround some ironies;
Example: She says she “forgot her homework.”
5. Commas and periods go inside of the quotation marks.
6. Question mark and exclamation marks go inside IF they are part of the quote, if not, they will go outside the quotation marks.
7. Semi colons and colons always go outside of the quotation marks.
8. Finally, the teacher will model correct usage of quotations by writing on the board several examples of sentences that use quotations correctly.
9. Teacher calls on student to come to the board and punctuate these sentences correctly.

5. Generalization
Base on our discussion “What is quotation?”
How do you punctuate and capitalize quotation correctly?
Write students answer on the board, let the whole class read, then in groups, and then by selected students.
6. Fixation of Skill
Put in the appropriate quotation marks:
1. Don’t give me any lip today! said his mother.
2. Joe tiptoed lightly into Jan’s room, Are you awake yet? he asked with a hopeful grin.
3. Don’t forget your swimsuit. he reminded her.
4. Sally disagrees with you, saying, It’s still too much to pay for it.

Directions: Punctuate and capitalize all the direct quotations below.
1. Grant have you ever had the measles asked Dr. Murray
2. Dr. Iris Murray asked Grant have you ever had measles
3. Education is much more than just studying books began the speaker
4. Sally stated that she would like to study astronomy
5. Are these flowers from your own garden asked Mrs. Smith

Read and put in the appropriate quotation marks:
1. John said Kim wants to play inside, not outside.
2. Have you seen the movie Beauty and the Beast?
3. Which store do you want to go to? asked Marie.
4. I don’t believe you, he said, you never tell the truth!
5. Where will you go? she asked.
6. Didn’t she say Your poetry assignment is due Monday. asked Jim.
7. Have you seen the movie Spiderman?
8. Finish your chores or forget your allowance! his mother yelled.
9. I have too much homework and don’t have time to finish my chores! Joe responded.
10. I wish I knew who my teacher was going to be for next year. Tom said.
11. I’m next! she whispered.
12. Sit quietly she said to her sister as they watched the movie.

Directions: Punctuate and capitalize all the direct quotations below. Do nothing to the indirect quotations, which do not repeat the speaker’s exact words.
1. We bake all our own pies said the waitress
2. The waitress said that they bake all their own pies

4. Have you ever seen a germ little Viola asked with curiosity
5. This is going to be hard to explain sighed Colleen
